1. I use almost exclusively aluminum and anodized aluminum rings for the jewelry I make mostly due to cost (I can’t really afford silver or gold rings). When buying rings, make sure you get saw-cut rings, not machine cut or plier cut. Sawing the rings creates a nice, smooth surface and makes your closures (when done carefully and properly) damn near invisible. Observe:

A machine/plier cut ring is on the left and a saw cut ring is on the right. Now, if you’re creating a large piece such as a shirt or helm and the invisible closure of each ring isn’t as important, you might want to go for machine cut for cost purposes.

If you are getting anodized (colored) aluminum rings, make sure that the rings are anodized AFTER they are cut - this way the ends of each ring is colored as well, which minimizes the appearance of the closure even further.

2. Sorry, but since I live in the states, I don’t know of any ring suppliers in the UK. I get all my rings from C&T Designs and I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend them. I can’t recommend them enough. They’re awesome people, all their rings are cut by hand, they’re a small business, their orders ship promptly, and they usually include a little sample bag of rings with each order. Their aluminum alloy is much stronger than most, and their bright aluminum rings shine brighter than most actual silver rings I’ve seen. Seriously, if you want quality, go with them.
